Barriers to Personal Growth and Development

Personal growth and development are the building blocks for improving your life – irrespective

of which aspects of your life you are intent on improving. Most of us have a deep seated desire

to improve (who doesn’t make New Year’s resolutions?), yet far too many of us fail to reach

our goals.

There can be numerous reasons for this, although those that have achieved their goals might

view these as excuses rather than valid reasons.Whatever your viewpoint, I think you’ll

agree that it is both frustrating and demoralising when you realise that having

set some goals and been all fired up,you find that once again your best intentions have

come to nothing.

What makes this so common?

1) Time constraints.

We are so busy being busy these days that more often than not we just don’t get round to doing

the important stuff. A strange human condition, but very common.

2) Focus.

This goes hand in hand with time constraints. We rarely spend enough time focusing on

the things that will be of benefit to us. Your personal growth and development will never happen

without you focusing on what needs to be achieved.

3)Effort.

As nice as it would be, deep down we all know that to get something, you have to put in

some effort. Unfortunately, in today’s world, this is not a very popular theme.

4) Distractions.

The flip side of focus. There are just too many other things out there that will demand

our attention if we are not careful. When this happens I always find it useful to remind myself

that they want my attention for THEIR benefit, not mine!

5)Personal programming.

From a very young age, and mostly without

realising it, we accumulate knowledge of what is “normal” – a sort of default setting

that we become comfortable with. This programming is very strong and is there to protect us

from getting hurt.

Unfortunately the negative side of this is that if we are to change and improve, we need to

lift ourselves out of this comfort zone. We thus find ourselves in a tug of war between what

our subconcious knows is “safe” and what we conciously know we need to do to make our lives

better.

No prizes for guessing which side usually wins!

The good news for anyone wanting to overcome barriers to personal growth and development

is that you don’t need to have a brain transplant or emigrate to another world.

All you need do is find someone who has already done the hard work and found ways

to conquer the barriers and then follow their advice and guidance. It really is that easy!

Set Personal Growth Goals For Your Personal Development

Set Goals. Setting goals is necessary to maintain your focus and urgency. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Goals are directly tied to your desires. Whether your goals are materialistic, lifestyle, relationship oriented, they must have a time set in which they will be obtained.

Now I know that the Law of Attraction has no time restraints on when it will manifest itself, but as your focus towards your goal or desire increases, so will your output of energy towards that given goal. Set goals and then set a time by which you will achieve that goal. As you approach the end of your time limit, your focus and energy towards your goal gets more intense. There must be accountability.

Set yourself up for deliberate attraction. This is essential to keeping your focus and frame of mind in a positive state. For example, if you look in your wallet, and your desire is to create wealth, and you don’t have any money inside, what feelings or thoughts do you get?

The Law of Attraction responds to the energy you put out. Now, thoughts are energy and feelings are a reaction from the thoughts you have. If you look into your wallet and see no money, what feeling does that give you? It makes you feel broke. What then are you going to get from the Law of Attraction? More of that feeling. The goal to deliberate attraction is to stay in control of the way you feel and to keep those feelings parallel or correspondent to the what your desire is.

Setting personal growth goals for your personal development is important. Personal Growth Tools are necessary to help keep you on the right path.

Improve Your Self Awareness For Personal Growth

Self awareness involves being conscious of who you are and how you will react in certain situations – but it’s also more than that.

What is Self Awareness

Self awareness is achieved by reflecting on your intentions and your actions. It is being aware of your own emotions and how to channel them in order to achieve what you want from life. So many of us re-act to life. Awareness of our selves enables us to be pro-active and therefore more in control of our life course. Self awareness stems from reflection, on trying to understand what we do and how we might do it differently to achieve greater success.

Self awareness involves self knowledge when we know ourselves we learn to trust ourselves and rely on our own judgment rather than the judgment of others.

How Do We Develop Self Awareness

One way of achieving self awareness is to take the time to think things through. So often in today’s world everything carries on at such a pace that it is much easier to say I haven’t the time or I can’t be bothered. If we stop to reflect on things we recognize that it is not time that is the problem but the way we view it and use it. The problem is that we get so caught up in the everyday happenings of our lives that we just don’t take the time to reflect.

When you reflect you look back over the happenings of your life in an attempt to discover how you have become the person you are. Unless we develop self awareness then we cannot change things and develop our full potential. Carl Rogers, who developed person centred counseling believed that everyone had within themselves the means to develop their full potential but in order to do that they had to develop a positive self concept.

We develop a positive understanding of who we are by doing things that we are happy with or successful at. Experience teaches us that when we do things that give pleasure not just to ourselves but to others then we are less stressed and happier. It makes us feel not only that what we are doing is worthwhile but that we ourselves are worthwhile. Part of self awareness is a recognition of the intrinsic value not just of ourselves but of others.

Techniques For Greater Self Awareness

We have already discussed the importance of reflection to becoming self aware – but there are other things that we can do to develop this quality in ourselves. In the East there is a greater recognition of the quality of self awareness and this is often achieved through the practice of yoga and meditation. Buddhist monks for example have to learn to meditate to develop a taste for silence.

Meditation comes in many forms. Some forms of meditation rely on the reciting of a mantra or sacred phrase. Christians, Muslims and Jews also recognize the benefits of meditation and contemplation and how this leads to greater self knowledge. A more recent tool in developing self awareness is cognitive therapy where we take greater control over out thinking processes and try to correct thoughts that are erroneous.

Finally, rediscover what is important to you. One way of doing this is to keep a journal. Many more people are now recognizing the benefits of journaling. Here you can record your thoughts, chart your progress and decide what you see as important. When you decide what is important in your life then you have an idea of what you value. Knowing what you value in life is a vital tool in self awareness and success. When we know what our values are, then it is much easier to chart a path in life that adds to our personal growth and happiness.

The Benefits of Self Awareness

When you become self aware you grow as a person. You develop self-acceptance and this in turn makes you more accepting of others. You become more self reliant and self motivated. These are the qualities that help you to continue growing as a person and to be successful in your chosen field.

The 3 Main Barriers to Personal Growth and Development

Image : http://www.flickr.com

We are all positive in nature. We all tend to lean on positivity rather than to negativity. But what makes us lean more on to the negative side sometimes? Is it automatic or is it even really a part of us? What are the barriers that keep us from growing? There are many factors that hinder our growth and personal development and unfortunately, we just don’t notice most of them.

1. Being closed-minded. We are sometimes so narrow-headed that our minds are shut down to opinions and fresh ideas. We are so enclosed in our comfort zones and as a result makes us short in understanding.

2. Poor time management. It is obvious that if we don’t use our time properly, everything will just go to waste. Imagine the buildup of a plan. What will happen if you set goals but fail to hit the exact timeframe of execution? Nothing. All the planning and build up for success will just crumble down without proper time management and that is for sure. Be ahead of time and you’ll benefit from it.

3. Distractions. We give in to distractions so easily which takes our personal progress off track. They seem to affect us most when we are bombarded with problems. If we’ve been doing something really great to develop ourselves, why would we want that to stop abruptly?

Try not to be swayed and keep your focus on what you need to do. This is the only way to develop and attain growth. Growth and development only happens if we let it happen. If you are not open to improvement, your development ends.

In summary, remain open, listen to fresh ideas, plan systematically and don’t give in to distractions. You might be surprised what will happen if you practice these simple tips to overcome the barriers that stop your development.
